Subject: additional tiles removed from fall 99 release

Because of a bookkeeping error, several tiles were left in the
OPS database that were identified as bad during preparation for
the Spring 99 data release. Since they remained in the OPS DB,
they were inadvertantly extracted for inclusion in the Fall 99
data release. Those tiles have been identified and removed
from both the OPS and Release Working DB's.

The offending scans were reset to quality zero in the Survey
Tile database when they were first identified in March, and one
has already been reobserved (although at quality=2).

In addition to the 3 tiles that were rescored with quality = 0,
2 more tiles will be removed from the Fall 99 release list
and the Release Working DB's (not the OPS DB)
because of contiguity requirements having lost one of the
bad tiles.

The tiles that are being removed are:

970610 n 102 11070 - RA Slip
970913 n 129 6196 - J-quadrant drop-out
970918 n 026 8417 - J-quadrant drop-out
970918 n 024 8415 - Contiguity
970918 n 025 8416 - Contiguity

A revised list of the candidate tiles for the Fall 99 release
can be found in ~roc/fall99.final.datescanh.list

Subject: Tiles to be removed from Fall99 list

Two more tiles will be removed from the Fall 99 candidate list.
They are tiles 24491 and 24492 (scans 043 and 044 from 990312n).
They were incorrectly assigned quality 10 in the operational
database. Their correct quality score was 4. The correct score
is present in the QA review and in the survey master tile database.

The sources from this tile will be removed from the Release
Working Tables (tmasss), and the quality values have been corrected
in the Scan Information table in the OPS database.

The Scan Selection for the Fall/Winter 1999 Data Release page
has been updated to reflect these changes at:

http://spider.ipac.caltech.edu/staff/roc/2mass/catalogs/criteria/fall99.scans.html

Subject: Fall/Winter Release Catalog Tables Update

1. Anomalous noise scans

All sources and scan information from the 37 scans with anomalously
high point source noise are now being removed from the Fall/Winter
Release Working Databases and Draft Catalogs accessible via IRSA
(in tmasss). The affected scans are described in:

http://spider.ipac.caltech.edu/staff/roc/2mass/catalogs/fall99/analysis/pnoise.html

You should remove any reference to those scans/tiles from all
internal and external files you maintain regarding the next data release.

The number of rows in each table reported in CATSCAN should automatically
update tonight.

Note that sources from the 37 tiles will be removed from Executive
Summary PSC files in few days. For reference, the installments
of the Summary PSC that contain the scans to be removed are:

fall99pscshort9.tbl
fall99pscshort16.tbl
fall99pscshort19b.tbl
fall99pscshort23.tbl

2. Saturated R1 magnitudes

As with the Spring 99 Release Point Source Catalog, the
magnitudes for all PSC sources that are saturated in R1 (rd_flg=3)
are now being set to -99.999. Only magnitudes in the saturated
bands are being changed. The Team made this
decision for the last release because there is valid uniform brightness
information for those sources.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Subject: Additional Tiles removed from Second IDR

Scans of seven more Tiles have been removed from the
Second Incremental Data Release because of known
PSC photometric biases.

The scan to be removed are:

Dateh Scan Tile

980319s 136 313710
980319s 137 313711
980319s 138 313712
980319s 139 313713
980319s 140 313714
980319s 141 313715
980319s 142 313716

The total number of tiles now included in the Release is
27,493.

You should make certain that any tools or databases you control
that refer to the upcoming release reflect the removal of these tiles.
